Here is a real special aircraft!
This ARF RQ-1-B Spy Plane is powered by an brushless electric motor of
the class 400 that replicates real famous NASA Spy Plane. Easy and quick to
build, needs 4 servos and a Brushless speed controller. The very light frame
employs two different types of extruded polystyrene and is covered with the
mimetic camouflage films. The kit includes a set of super light wheels. It is
not just a great park flyer but just a true electric scale model able to flight
on the normal fields. The super detailed instructions permit to everybody with
some building experience to afford this construction. Flying characteristics are
featured on the May 2007 issue of Backyard Flyer
"What could be a cooler than an RC scale model of an unmanned aerial vehical?
The new, easy-to-build Electric RQ1-B UAV from Nitro Models flies and looks
great. It's really an electric thermal glider disguised as a spy plane. It's
constructed of built-up balsa and has military camouflage covering. Any
intermediate or advance pilot will be completely delighted with it."
"Watt meter results with above set-up: 14.5A / 160W / 11V with just about
The performance is just perfect for me as I tend to fly the RQ-1-B
scale-like for the most part. It's also fun to fly it like a powered glider,
high enough to become a speck (never a problem with the range of the AR6100
2.4) then motor off and thermal around for 10 min. or so......then do it
again. With the prop size, I found that anything larger than a 9" will
certainly invite lots of prop strikes on take-offs as well as landings. Let
me know what you decide to do and photos are welcomed."
The plane is built and painted and it's a magnificent

In real life, the RQ-1-B is an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) which the
U.S. Air Force describes as a "medium-altitude, long-endurance unmanned aerial
vehicle system." It is a Joint Forces Air Component Commander-owned theater
asset for reconnaissance, surveillance and target acquisition in support of the
Joint Force commander. The RQ-1-B can be employed in moderate risk areas
without risking the life of the operator. Examples include areas where enemy air
defenses have not been fully suppressed, open ocean environments, and
biologically or chemically contaminated environments.
The RQ-1A/B is a system, not just an aircraft. The fully operational
system consists of four air vehicles (with sensors), a ground control station
(GCS), a RQ-1-B primary satellite link communication suite and 55 people.
The tail is swept down because the emergency landing parachute deploys from the
bottom of the aircraft causing it to land upside-down. This inverted crash
landing protects expensive optics and, because the tail is swept down, does not
damage the tail.
